Dan spends his days at Ramsey Theory Group, the technology holding company he founded — bridging the gap between business and software, and turning the vision of organizations into something an engineer can ship. He programs in Python and JavaScript, builds data visualizations and machine-learning models, and works alongside entrepreneurs to sharpen their ideas. Before founding Ramsey Theory Group, Dan worked as an investment consultant and a data-management consultant in New York.
Dan graduated from Columbia University in New York — Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa — where he studied Intellectual History, Philosophy, and Mathematics. He received the Columbia Lily Prize for his thesis, The Reconstruction of Language and Time: Mathematics, Artificial Languages, and the Changing Idea of Time in the Scientific Revolution. It was his fascination with the history of linguistic thought, and with early efforts to create artificial languages, that drew him into mathematics and artificial intelligence.
Outside of his work at Ramsey Theory Group, Dan writes. He maintains the Open Mind blog — essays on epistemology, the history of science, and the philosophy of mathematics — and is the author of two forthcoming books: The Predictive Present, on forecasting and the future of intelligent systems, and How Language Works, on mathematics, artificial languages, and the structures of meaning. His ideas have been featured in Yahoo Finance, PR Newswire, and AI Tech Park. He also founded the Dan Herbatschek Scholarship for students from underrepresented backgrounds pursuing machine learning and mathematics, and is currently building ALEXI Learning, a platform designed to make rigorous quantitative thinking accessible to anyone curious enough to try it.
Outside of work, Dan reads widely on the history of science, digs into mind-stretching math, and pursues boxing as both a discipline and a sport. He loves teaching what he knows to new programmers — and learning what he doesn’t from older ones. Most of all, he treasures time with his wife, his two daughters, and his son, in New York.
